Marrakech & the Atlas

A flight takes half a day. Here is how to spend the rest.

  1. Tandem paraglider with a yellow and red wing flying over a terraced mountain village near Marrakech

    Morning: fly

Sunrise or mid-morning flights catch the calmest air. You are back in Marrakech before lunch.

  2. Red and blue dyed wool skeins hanging on lines above a souk alley in Marrakech

    Afternoon: the souks

Get lost on purpose. Find the dyers’ souk, the spice square and the leather workers.

  3. Koutoubia Mosque and minaret in warm late-afternoon light, Marrakech

    Evening: Jemaa el-Fnaa

Watch the square fill with musicians and food stalls from a rooftop café.

Zellige, cut by hand

Look down in any riad: the floors and fountains are zellige, glazed clay tiles chipped by hand into stars and crosses, then set piece by piece. The pattern on this page follows the same rule, an eight-pointed star repeated without end.

When to fly

  • Autumn

Clear skies, warm days, gentle thermals. Our favourite season.

  • Winter

Snow on the high peaks behind you and crisp, smooth air.

  • Spring

Green valleys and almond blossom below the wing.

  • Summer

Fly early: sunrise flights beat the heat.
